Product ideation

The difference between a consumer and a customer

The customer (the buyer) were the parents or care givers and the consumer (the user) were the preschool audience. Understanding the potential needs, fears and agenda of the customers, the parents, helped guide the concept. Conceptually the aim was to deliver an educational tool in disguise as a fun game.

This project was a fun one and laid bare the difference between a customer and a consumer. Often these are clearly the same people, but in this case there is a separation.

The customer were the parents or care givers and the consumer were the preschool audience.

Problem

Ideate and present at least one concept for a brand-building digital product. This needs to be fast to deploy and aimed at the preschool audience.

Process

This was a fast turnaround. I began with some quick research of the target customers and trends as they related to app and device usage.

Then I researched what was trending around ‘children using screens’ sentiment.

Research

Information about the show itself was scarce, consisting of a media pack: press release and a series of stills. However for the audience itself there is more than enough material.

Understanding the potential needs, fears and agenda of the customers, the parents, helped guide the concept.

Ideation / Concept

Conceptually the aim was to deliver an educational tool in disguise as a fun game.

The iPad was the obvious choice, considering an app the was just as usable on the mini as the large screen.

The concept I choose was a simple little ‘learn to write the alphabet’ tool. It ticked the ‘educational’ box for the customer

Design

The design process was to simply support the friendly stylings of the TV show itself and offer a fun, calm environment. Round corner fonts, bright colours, beach feel.

Naming

We used the name ‘Learn Your ABCs’ as we knew the American audience were a larger potential market the show was hoping to break in to.

The research around possible separation between customer and consumer was hugely beneficial in my ongoing UX and CX approach.

Additional product

While researching the customers I found a potential need for some of them. Taking kids to the supermarket can be a tiring prospect so anything that takes their attention may be a useful tool.

The simple iPhone app was a ‘Where’s Wally’ for the various characters of Bubble Bath Bay.

Giving the customer a helpful tool that also built positive brand sentiment with customer and consumer is an excellent potential outcome.

Wrap-up and learnings

This project was a lot more informative than the simple concept shows.

The research around possible separation between customer and consumer was hugely beneficial in my ongoing UX and CX approach. This project was one that really sent me off on various paths of research and discovery.
